Fourth Estate, mark 3

The media world in USG is evolving again; these rules will supersede all previous iterations of the media rules.

Top-Tier Outlets

Several media outlets will continue to exist as they do now. Players will make submission anonymously to the Editor's Desk, where admins will review the content and post the piece to the appropriate outlet. Each player will be limited to one media multi as a name to publish under.

The bar for publication on these top-tier outlets will be quite high. Writing quality, timeliness, and your multi's publication history will all be considered. With this high bar for quality comes a strong influence on public opinion. These top-tier outlets will carry significant weight in the e-people's eyes, and these media pieces will see the greatest impact.

The top-tier outlets will include:
The New York Times (print articles)
CNN (television programs)
[Politico (Internet)

Party Outlets

To allow for a greater range of publication, several media outlets will be designated for use by the two parties. In these outlets, party members will be allowed to post new pieces freely, once again under the name of a media multi (one per player). Party chairmen will be given mod powers initially; they can choose to designate Media officers as they see fit.

Given the association between the parties and the outlets the public will see, their influence on public opinion will be much lower. It will take a sustained message across high quality pieces in the party media outlets to approach the effect on public opinion seen in top-tier publication.

The party outlets include (left/right):

Newsweek/Newsmax (print)
MSNBC/Fox News Channel (television)
Huffington Post/Drudge Report (internet)

Press Conferences

With the new changes, obviously, access to the media is now broader. To attend a press conference, however, you must still have a published media multi, whether it be in one of the top tier outlets or in party media. Inappropriate behavior at a press conference can lead to negative consequences for your media multi's future readership.

Media Multis

You may only have one media multi at one time. However, you may change your media multi - please indicate in your submission that you are doing so and please do not constantly do so. You can also submit articles under the name of your primary characters.

Submission procedure

Please do not PM an admin a story to consider for publication. Instead, kindly submit to the editor's desk, using the procedure above.

A few tweaks, mostly cosmetic.

There will be four threads:

1. The Mainstream Media
2. Conservative Opinion Journalism
3. Liberal Opinion Journalism
4. Other Pundits and Columnists Up-and-Coming Media

The Mainstream Media is the same as the top tier outlets (NYT/CNN/Politico) from the prior reset. Please submit as before, with only one minor change: note the name of the publication you wish to be published in. It has to be a "real" mainstream media source. The biases of the real-world outlets still exist, but the standards for publication generally remain about the same. Right-leaning pieces for WSJ and left-leaning pieces for NYT may get slight bumps, but generally keep it as "balanced" as last reset.

Conservative and Liberal opinion journalism is equivalent to the Newsweek/MSNBC/HuffPo and Newsmax/Fox/Drudge from the last reset. Functionally, it will again work as it did before - the party chair (and his designee) will have editorial control. Try and indicate "what source" your piece is coming from, but it's not a huge deal if you don't, mostly aesthetics.

Other pundits and columnists Up-and-coming media is again the same as the equivalent from the last reset - anyone can post, nobody has editorial control except me (and I'll only exercise it to get rid of TOS violations). Again, try and indicate "where" the piece is appearing, but it's mostly a cosmetic thing.

Just a reminder of the 4E submission procedure. If you PM'ed me a piece today, no need to re-submit it, but please use the moderated Editor's Desk forum in the future. Thanks!

Policy on Leaks:

You do not need prior admin approval to report information leaked from other players, but you must disclose your source to the media admin. You can post the story first and send me a PM after. If you fail to disclose your source in a timely fashion, your credibility may take a dive and you may be hit with a Dan Rather Memogate-type media "scandal".
