Marshall "Mark" Christian Alexander III was born to Marshall "Buddy" Christian Alexander Jr. and Suzanne (nee' Malveaux) Alexander on August 7, 1951 in Nederland, Texas he was the first of eight children. At the time, his father was a rice farmer in the wetlands of Jefferson County. Suzanne, was a homemaker who taught Sunday school at Grace Primitive Baptist Church. For his education, Mark attended Central High School, graduating in 1968.
Upon his graduation, Mark went to Rice University on a football scholarship, with the blessings on his parents neither of whom attended college. At Rice, Mark fell in love with an African American beauty queen named Meesha Lincoln much to his parents disappointment. There he studied agriculture, with a minor in political science. Upon his graduation in 1972, Mark chose to study at the University of Texas, where he brought a master's in agriculture. He then became an police officer with the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department and eventually was elected Sheriff.
In 1988, he was named Secretary of the Texas Department of Corrections by Governor Bill Clements. He served for two years and worked to make the department more successful. He resigned to launch a campaign for Congress for Texas 2nd congressional district. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary and with law enforcement behind him and appeal to rural voters, Mark won the election with 50.9% after a recount.
He serves as Secretary of the Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans; a member of the National Rifle Association; the Blue Dog Coalition; and United Way. He currently lives in Beaumont with his wife, Meesha and daughters, Christine; Alexandria; and Solange, and they attend Bethany Primitive Baptist Church. Mark is a moderate on economic issues, but a social conservative.
