Biography:Charles August Kennedy the son of Richard and Lois Kennedy was born October 5, 1957 in Washington, D.C.. Charlie, as he is commonly known, grew up in the lap of luxury spending time between homes in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia's Main Line, and Southern California. His father was President and CEO of Kennedy-Lockwood Industries, a business that had been started a generation earlier as a weapons manufacturing plant before World War II. Growing up he attended the prestigious Riverdale school in the Bronx where he graduated in 1975.
Upon completing his secondary education, Charlie enrolled in Harvard where he had planned to major in Business. However, in 1976 it was revealed that company officials at Kennedy-Lockwood had signed off on weapons sales to Communist militarist groups in Africa and Southeast Asia some of which had been used against American soldiers and it was further revealed that Charlie's father, Richard, had participated in the cover-up. This prompted the 19 year-old Kennedy to sever ties with his father, his mother having promptly filed for divorce, and he then decided to pursue a degree in Government with a minor in International Relations.
Seeking to right the wrongs of his father, he participated in the Peace Corps over the summers of 1978,1979, and 1980; traveling to Latin America and Africa. Apart from these activities while at Harvard, Kennedy played tennis and cello in the school's orchestra. It was also in the spring of 1980 that he met a young psychology major by the name of Emma Eden, the daughter of a prominent Chicago politician. The couple were married in 1982 after they had both graduated from college. Kennedy then attended the University of Virginia where he earned his law degree.
Upon graduating law school, the couple returned to Emma's hometown of Chicago where Charlie took a job in the District Attorney's office in the Civil Rights division. Emma opened her own practice on the Upper East Side where the couple lived and welcomed their first child, Caleb, in 1982. Since then they have had five more children: Christian, Lilly, Elizabeth, Carter, and Chloe. In 1988, Kennedy ran for the State Senate winning in his district handily. He became immensely popular in the State House and was eventually convinced to run for Congress from the fifth Congressional District after it was redistricted from the Illinois' eighth in 1992. He narrowly beat out a tough field of Democratic challengers in the primary before going on to handily win the general election
