Biography:
Linda is the fifth child, and only daughter in the Parker family; a family which had been running their farm since the days when Missouri was a territory. By a remarkable coincidence, Linda was born nine months after her father returned from fighting in Europe and her brother Jonathon was born 9 months after her father left to fight. When Dorothy Granger died of breast cancer in 1960, Linda threw herself into her studies, so she wouldn’t have to think about her mother. Through hard she secured a full scholarship to the University of Missouri, which she went to attend in 1964, she would study to become a teacher. Linda met her future husband, Patrick, in their American history class, in their freshman year. He was from a well off family in Colombia, who was rebelling against his family, by getting involved in college protests. He would be the one who got her involved in her own causes. In 1966, when NOW was founded, both would join their ranks, with Linda becoming the President of the University of Missouri’s chapter. While Patrick would actively seek trouble, Linda would make sure that every time NOW had a protest planned, the proper papers were in order, and the authorities notified. They would become involved in the grass roots efforts to end the war in Vietnam, once again with Linda avoiding trouble, while Patrick would get himself in trouble. In 1969, Linda and Patrick would graduate from college, and not too long after that they got married. They moved into a small apartment in Colombia; Linda would teach elementary school, while Patrick would go to law school. In 1973, Patrick received his law degree, and they would move to Independence, Missouri. After the Watergate scandal, both became very active in Democratic politics. In 1976, Patrick ran for the State Legislator, and one in a close election. Just a few days after the results were called, the couple’s first child, Shirley Chisolm, was born. In, 1981, Linda convinced Patrick to run for the House of Representatives, and he would go onto win the seat in 1982. Two years later, they’re second child, John Adams would be born. While Patrick was in Congress, Linda would teach in Maryland, where the kids went to school. Tragedy struck in January of 1991. Linda and the kids were visiting her family in Missouri, while Patrick had to return to Washington. A snowstorm and an icy road led to a car accident that killed Patrick. Despite her grief, Linda accepted the call when she was selected to fill her husband’s seat. Since then, she’s been spending all of her free time with her family, and all of her time in Congress trying to live up to her husband’s memory. She was elected in her own right, by a 60-40 margin in 1992.
In 1992, she would lose a race for the senate by 100 thousand votes. In a 1997 Special Election, she would be elected to that same seat by 13 thousand votes.
