Alan P. Richmond was born in Springdale, Ohio on July 24, 1956. His parents, who had lived in the small town for 20 years, moved the Richmond family to Cincinnati in in 1968, during the middle of Alan's adolescent years. Enamored by the city and what it offered, Richmond decided to excel in his surroundings. After graduating from High School, Richmond decided to enroll at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College to gain an Employee and Labor Relations certificate. But between getting this and enrolling at Ohio State University, he witnessed the slow and painful death of a cousin who was living in abject poverty. Spurred by the anger of that death and awakening to the beginning of the decline of industry in the region, Richmond started to turn his attention to politics. He majored in Political Science at OSU, gaining summa cum laude status in the process.
Armed with that degree, Richmond set out to do good for his community by volunteering in numerous activist groups, civil rights work, and workers rights organizations. After a brief stint on the Cincinnati city council, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1984. He remained there for two terms, with his second ending in 1992. This past year, Richmond ran and successfully won the Democratic nomination for the Class II Ohio Valley Senate seat, and in a very close race with Republican Tom Dayton, Richmond won the seat by less than 1 percent. He is currently in his first term as United States Senator.
