Kyle Van Horn was born in Richmond, TX. After graduating from high school, he attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the famed Corps of Cadets. He then went to law school at the University of Houston.
After law school, he built on his military background by taking a commission as a U.S. Army JAG attorney. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam before returning home. After his military service, Van Horn got a job as an Assistant District Attorney for Harris County (Houston). Van Horn rose through the office, became a chief felony prosecutor, and was appointed District Attorney.
As DA, Van Horn transformed the office. The office grew dramatically in size during the 80’s as Houston and Harris County experienced massive outward growth. The DA’s office during Van Horn’s tenure was extremely efficient. Because of Van Horn’s willingness to pursue the death penalty whenever applicable, the office was scorned by critics as a “death penalty machine.”
Van Horn ran for Congress in the 22nd District of Texas (suburban Houston) and won convincingly.
