Beau Clayton Patterson was born to farm owners Logan and Mildred Patterson just outside of Bainbridge in Decatur County, Georgia. It was on this farm that Beau was raised for the first seven years of his life, before the Pattersons sold up and moved to Cairo, Georgia.

Beau attended Cairo High School, and was running back for the school football team - the Syrupmakers*. After graduating high school in 1965, Beau voluntarily enlisted enlisted in the US Army, where served in Vietnam until the end of US involvement in 1973.

After he returned from the war, he entered business working for an banking firm. He soon found his calling in politics, and was elected to the Georgia state legislature in 1975.

Following five years in the legislature, he decide to run for the US House seat vacated by Dawson Mathis in the Georgia 2nd. He was elected on a narrow margin, and has continued to hold the seat since.
