Tim Anderson was born in Sacramento, California to his father Darien, who was a banker and his mother, Lois, a criminal defense attorney.

He was educated at Cal Poly. He played soccer 4 years in college. Also he started a community action club for his college campus, ran the student government for 3 years, participated actively on the debate team, and graduated with a 4.5 GPA.

Before running for congress he worked as Vice Chairman of the Sacramento City bank his father had worked at.

In 1990, he became a voice for many outraged citizens in his community and ran for Congress in his home district of CA-4, where he won with 75% of the vote.
