James Kent was born on June 10th, 1952 in Saginaw, Michigan. He was the 3rd of 5 children. Kent attended the Saginaw Public School District, and graduated from the district in
Dean, Moritz College of Law, The Ohio State University 2004-20081970. He went on to Attend Ohio University, receiving a B.A. in Communications, and winning a National Championship in Debate during his Senior year. Kent went on to graduate from the College of Law, at The Ohio State University in 1977. Receiving his law degree at the end of winter term, Kent turned around, and ran for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. He won the Democratic Primary narrowly, and won the general election by a safe margin. He would win reelection in 1980, and 1982. He won win a State Senate seat in 1984, winning reelection in 1988. Following the 1988 election, Kent was elected as State Senate President, serving up until now. He ran for United States Senate against Republican County Executive Allstair Morrison. Kent prevailed by around 20,000 votes. Following a term in the Senate, Kent would accept a teaching position at Princeton University. He would return to the Great Lakes, accepting a position as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He would leave that position to lead the Wisconsin AFL-CIO. Following the resignation of Ron Kind, due to campaign finance violations, Kent was elected to Congress's lower chamber in 2013.
